Acknowledgments

In putting together this account many sources have been drawn upon (acknowledged in the Notes) and I am grateful to the countless individuals who have contributed and encouraged me by word and letter over the years.

Particularly remembered is the late George E. Page of Lancing, who hand-copied long sections of Challen’s Transcripts for me long before the records of Eastgate Chapel were deposited with the West Sussex Record Office, whose staff, as always, have been most helpful.

My thanks too, to those who have read the draft and made helpful suggestions, particularly to Peter Evershed, whose family were involved with the General Baptists of Sussex, including Chichester, for many generations.
