Read Luke 19:1-10 together.
1. Zacchaeus was ruled out by many as someone Jesus would want to know, ‘as a sinner’ (v7). Why did the crowds complain about Jesus searching out Zacchaeus? Why do you think we sometimes rule ourselves or others out from knowing God?
2. Zacchaeus’ name comes from the name Zechariah, meaning ‘righteous one’. How do Jesus words in Luke 5:32 shed light on this story? ‘I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.’
3. Looking back on your faith story, can you see how God was searching for you? Perhaps you are searching for God at the moment. How does it make you feel to know that God is the one doing the searching, wanting to draw you into a friendship with him?
4. What do you make of Zacchaeus’ response in v.8? What does repenting, changing our hearts and lives, look like for us? What did it look like when you became a Christian?
5. In the stories shared (you could replay this bit of the message) each person included the example of one or more people that God used to search them out. Ask God to put on your heart people who he might be searching out. What could your part be in this? To pray? To Invite? To share your testimony?
