Life with a Purpose

1. “To the best of our scientific understanding, the universe is a blind and purposeless process, full of sound and fury but signifying nothing. During our infinitesimally brief stay on our tiny speck of a planet, we fret and strut this way and that, and then are heard of no more.”

Yuval Noah Harari, Homo Deus

Is there a purpose to life? If not, should we make one up? If there is, what is it, and where does it come from?

2. Look up these references to ‘the hour’ in John’s Gospel: John 2:1-4, John 12:20-28, John 13:1-5, John 17:1-5. What do you understand Jesus to have meant by this phrase?

3. Look at John 12:20-28 more closely. What did ‘the hour’ involve for Jesus? Now reflect on Jesus’ life on earth in its entirety. To what extent did his life from cradle to grave point towards ‘the hour’?

4. “At its simplest this is our purpose – a relationship with God in the beautiful world he has made, and ultimately in the even more beautiful world he will remake.” To what extent do you agree with this statement? Read Ephesians 1:4-6. What do these verses suggest about our purpose?

5. “Jesus’ purpose shaped his priorities, and his priorities shaped his choices.” Which of the following challenges you most:

·         A clear grasp of your purpose in life?

·         Aligning your priorities with your purpose?

·         Aligning your choices with your priorities?
