Online Service 19/07/20

Introduction

Hi everyone! A warm welcome to the CBC online service.

Let’s worship together

We begin with a tremendous version of this favourite song for so many. Hope you’ll be raising the roof on that 3rd verse wherever you are!

Schools out!

To mark the end of what has been a uniquely challenging school term and to help us pray as we look ahead, Louise will help us pray following some thoughts from members of the CBC church family.

Looking to the Rainbow

To link with our end of term prayer focus this morning. Here’s a song to enjoy that was put together by Nick and Becky Drake who are doing wonderful work in their local schools up in Birmingham.

Reading

Our reading for today is a selection of passages from John’s gospel. Press play below to hear it read by members of one of our CBC small groups. Head here, here, here and here for the texts.

Questions for you

1. “To the best of our scientific understanding, the universe is a blind and purposeless process, full of sound and fury but signifying nothing. During our infinitesimally brief stay on our tiny speck of a planet, we fret and strut this way and that, and then are heard of no more.” Yuval Noah Harari, Homo Deus.

Is there a purpose to life? If not, should we make one up? If there is, what is it, and where does it come from?

2. “Jesus’ purpose shaped his priorities, and his priorities shaped his choices.” Which of the following challenges you most:

  • A clear grasp of your purpose in life?

  • Aligning your priorities with your purpose?

  • Aligning your choices with your priorities?

A closing song

We have spent time today considering Jesus and His life packed with purpose that glorified His Father God. As we seek to follow Him with determination and purpose ourselves we sing these words together. By His blood and in His name, In His freedom I am free, For the love of Jesus Christ, Who has resurrected me.
