The Invitation: ‘Come, Be’ Mark 3: 13-19

1. Any invitation that we receive depends on generosity. We’d never go to a wedding, or party, a meal or a gathering without the generosity of the person inviting us! What are some of the hallmarks of generosity? What phrases come to mind to describe what generosity is? Which of those words you’ve shared relate to God and the way He is described to us in the bible?

2. Re-read the passage from Sunday which is Mark 3: 13-19

Jesus called his followers ‘that they might be with him’. Before we are sent out in service, Jesus invites us to friendship and proximity.

Why is this order important? To ‘be with him’ before we ‘go for him’?

3. Ellen cross-referenced this passage with Jesus’ parable of the Great Banquet in Luke 16: 15-24 which you may like to look at together.

What do we learn about the heart of God in this story?

What encouragements and warnings are there?

4. The invitation to ‘come, be’ sounds passive but actually requires intention and action. The 12 disciples were a motley bunch and a real mixture of individuals. They ‘came to him’ (v13), and made a choice to choose to be with him.

How can we give priority to cultivating our friendship with Jesus? What does it mean to regularly ‘choose’ him?

5. This year Covid has stolen so much from us and left many feeling vulnerable and raw. Praise God for his grace and kindness – and his willingness to call us back to himself again. Are there practical things to share that have helped you during Covid to stay close to the Lord? Or that may help each other going forwards as the world gradually reopens?

Pray for one another around this theme.
