On the Frontlines - Royal Marines, Falklands War, Christian mission in Kenya, and in the armed forces - some lessons of experience by David Baldwin MBE.
The RMG, Feeding Futures and Men United are pleased to invite you to an evening with Major (Rtd) David Baldwin on Monday 26th September 2022 at 7.30 at CBC.
David is Chair of Trustees of St. Peter's Lifeline, a small Christian charity based in Glastonbury which provides support to education, school feeding, girl's health (preventing FGM), micro-finance for women, care for the disabled, ending period poverty, providing clean water and sanitation and preventing disease. Started in 2009, the charity aims to bring 'Hope Through Education' and to enable a more secure future for young people, under a core vision of ‘Embrace, Educate, Equip & Empower’.
Feeding Futures and St. Peter's Lifeline have been sharing their respective experiences and approaches over the past year and it was felt that this could be strengthened through sharing with a wider RMG and MM audience.
David's story however goes beyond his experience with St. Peter's Lifeline. Born and brought up in Kenya, a childhood friend of Michael Askwith, he joined the Royal Marines in 1962 after education in England, and served until 1984 when he was medically discharged due to a rugby, rather than a war, injury. He saw active service in the former Tanganyika, Aden and the Falkland Islands, where he was responsible for the repatriation of over two thousand Argentinian prisoners of war in two voyages. He was recalled to the Colours in 1991 to assist in a reorganisation of the command structure of the Royal Marines, for which he was awarded an MBE. He then worked with the Sultan of Oman's Armed Forces, the MoD's Capital Works Projects and as a Crisis Management Consultant for the nuclear power industry before being challenged, with his daughter, to start up St. Peter's Lifeline to provide support in a rural community near Mt Kenya, in the country of his birth.
As a committed Christian, David has tried to live out his faith in a variety of challenging environments which will no doubt be of interest to us all. More recently, he has been an active member of Military Ministries International (MMI), which aims to ''support Christians in the world’s armed forces and to see military men and women come to a living faith in Jesus Christ and grow to be mature and effective disciples of our Lord as they serve in their navy, army or air force". This has included daily prayer Zooms bringing together military personnel in Africa, Europe, South Asia and the Middle East, with particular focus on the Ukraine situation since the beginning of this war.
This multi-faceted and illustrated talk promises to enlighten, inspire and challenge us all with some key messages for the saints!
